If your big toe has a weird shape and sticks out from the side of your foot, you mighth have a bunion. Bunions are bony protrusions of the great toe joint and can cause friction when wearing shoes. This, in turn, causes pain. A bunion found on the outside of the foot on or below the fifth (or baby) toe, known as a bunionette or Tailors Bunion, can also cause intense bunion pain. Relief for bunions can be found with a variety of products. Treatment could be as simple as using a bunion splint, brace or pad. Care for bunions may include treatment of the affected area as opposed to a cure.

The clinical name for a bunion is hallus valgus. These annoying and painful protrusions are caused by a variety of factors. Some of the factors which may contribute to the development of a bunion could be an active lifestyle, shoes that don't fit right, or shoes that lack space in the toe area. A foot that pronates or rolls inward excessively when walking has a higher tendency for forming bunions. This is due to the fact that this type of foot initiates an imbalance with the muscles and tendons around the great toe joint. This causes the great toe to deviate toward the outside of the foot, while the bone in front of it shifts toward the inside of the foot.

The best way to know if you have a bunion or bunionette is to pay close attention to your feet and remember to check them often for any abnormalities. If you see a bony protrusion on your big toe and it feels pinched when you are wearing shoes then there is a good chance that you could have a bunion or bunionette. Bunions can sometimes be treated or even prevented with some simple adjustments to your shoes.

One thing that you can do to help with bunions is to buy well-fitting shoes that feature a wide toe. You can also use bunion shields or pads to cushion the bunion while you are walking. Using orthotic devices or inserts that redistribute the pressure along the arch and ball of the foot and control the separation of the bones can also be helpful. In many cases, pain relief can be achieved simply by getting better shoes and pads.

Tips

Most bunions are treatable without the need for surgery. To increase your chances of not developing a bunion, you should never force your foot into a shoe that doesn't fit properly. Only buy shoes that conform to the shape of your feet. Try to get shoes that have wide insteps, broad toes and soft soles.

If you already happen to have a bunion, try to wear shoes that have enough room so that you don't have to put pressure on it. This should relieve a good deal of your pain. It might also be a good idea to have your shoes stretched professionally. You may also try protective pads to cushion the area that is causing the pain.

If your bunion has progressed to the point where you have difficulty walking, or you are experiencing pain even though you are wearing properly fitting shoes, you may need surgery. This decision would have to be made by your podiatrist. Your foot doctor is your best source for information and advice in regards to your bunion care.
